Termite Treatment Options

Owners of buildings under termite attack are often confused by pest controllers offering different treatments and different prices and giving differing advice.

AS 3660.2 (2000) gives standards relating to the general approach to be taken to termites and a range of termite treatment methods. It does not rate any particular method as being better than another- this is left to the pest controller, and hence the room for variation in advice in this very subjective area. However, home owners should expect all advice to fall within AS 3660.2, not least because most insurance policies require this from their operators.

Below is some information that will help you to decide on the best termite treatment for your situation. There is no simple answer to this but there are some ground rules that you should follow if you suspect that you have termites.

Rule 1.
DON'T TOUCH. Any suspect termite damage in your home should be left alone. How can we poison your termites if you have scared them away?

Rule 2.
DON'T WORRY Treatment materials and methods have improved dramatically in the last few years. All termite infestations can now be controlled, almost always with low toxicity materials and often with little intrusion into your home and lifestyle. You may even get to like your termite specialist. We certainly have wonderful treatments that were only dreamed of 10 years ago.

Specialist Termite Control's Termite Treatment Overview

Although termite colony control methods have improved dramatically a continued trend to high density building is making protection of buildings with chemical barriers more difficult. We see little point in recommending a chemical barrier to a building where issues such as access mean that the barrier will not be reasonably complete. We do not like the idea of a 90% barrier, because it gives a false sense of security. Termites seem to be pretty good at find the gaps.

So, Specialist Termite Control's policy is to focus on chemical barrier protection in only those building that lend themselves to a high level of protection. If this is in doubt, we focus on colony control and often do not follow a successful colony control program with a chemical treatment- preferring instead to manage the on-going risk of re-infestation with regular inspections and perhaps termite monitors.

This is why a good and well-understood termite treatment plan is so important.
